Update from the President

For Rainbow Auckland's February 2020 networking mixer, we kicked off with the annual BBQ with Rainbow New Zealand Charitable Trust presenting the Tertiary Scholarship Awards at SO/ Hotel. Thank you all who attended and supported the awardees.

Congratulations to Joel Armstrong, Rowan Button, Azaria Howell, John-Vincent Maxell and Lillian McArthur — winners of this year's scholarships.

The Tertiary Scholarship programme is to support, encourage and nurture our rainbow community leaders of the future. Every year the Trust receives applications from dozens of outstanding LGBTQI+ youngsters who have demonstrated the most extraordinary achievements including community contribution beyond their years. These are available annually through the Rainbow New Zealand Charitable Trust to assist students who identify as LGBTQI+. Successful applicants would be able to demonstrate leadership qualities and a positive role model influence for Rainbow-affirming peer and community support, and have a good academic record.

Do you know someone who should apply for a 2021 Tertiary Scholarship? Find out more information from the Rainbow New Zealand Charitable Trust.

Our next mixer, Love Karangahape Road, is this 4th of March at Trilogy Bar and Café at 5:30pm. Karangahape Road Business Association Chairperson, Michael Richardson, will be speaking to us with a range of other business owners in the area. Also come see the launch of the 'Karangahape Road Queer Venues Spaces' leaflet.

Bring your business cards please, to maximise the networking opportunity!

Again an exciting new network for New Zealand’s Rainbow communities has launched,
Rainbow Directory! Rainbow Auckland also have been privileged to a behind-the-scenes look off a new service to strengthen networking New Zealand’s Rainbow communities, businesses and services in major centres and our regions!
RA have signed a partnership with Rainbow Directory where we will receive a 10% kick-back to our coffers, for all RA members who join this service.

If you yourself have a contact in an organisation you feel we can connect with please tell us. We are always on the lookout.

Ngā mihi,

Richard Burt

Networking Mixer Whakaaro (thinking) and Updates

Rainbow Auckland (RA) is an Auckland-based LGBTQI+ networking and social organisation. One of our primary means to deliver this is through our monthly Networking Mixers.

Saving the recurring date of the first Wednesday of each month, except January, due to the festive break. RA as a Not-For-Profit organisation, partnering with venues / businesses to co-host monthly Networking Mixers, with our hardworking volunteer Executive team, that all have day jobs.

We encourage active and reciprocal membership to be anxiously engaged, making your membership work for you. Maximise these opportunities, by talking to everyone, bring your business card to pass on and network. We are all about Business, Professionals and Community.

Keeping it fresh is important. Exclusivity we can only choose 11 venues per year. If you have a suitable space or a good suggestion for a venue, email it through to info@rainbowauckland.org.nz. We location-scout venues / hubs that you may not frequent due to busy lifestyles, ideally theming our mixers as a point of interest.

February has always had a youthful, future leaders of our community focus, partnering with our sister organisation, the Rainbow NZ Charitable Trust (RNZCT) who awards the successful Tertiary Scholarship recipients in a relaxed backyard Summer BBQ feel to the evening. It’s a nice way to start a year!

March will see a collaboration between Rainbow Auckland (RA) and the Karangahape Road Business Association (KBA) launching ‘Karangahape Road Queer Venues’ flyer. RA wanted to show LOVE Karangahape Road, due to all the enhancements, saying that the inner-city hub of K’Road is OPEN for business.

April will see RA stretching out to Avondale. Jo Pilkington and the team at First Scene will be hosting us all, read her snippet of excitement below in this newsletter.

May is a hoot of a Networking Mixer, as it’s the NZ International Comedy Festival. No speakers, it’s a fabulous lineup of LGBTQI+ comedians, unashamedly plugging ticket sales with teasers for their coming shows.

June sees the internal business end with our AGM.

July we are in the process of planning a sports theme! Please feed in your leads of any queer-oriented sports teams into our email and we’ll do the rest. In the subject line state: Queer Sports suggestion. Work hard, Play hard! Encouraging healthy, balanced, active lifestyles, to be your BEST YOU!
